Hi Shyruban ,
I'm a Salem player as well, Been playing Salem over a year, been playing H&H a little over six months. You're right in that this game has no Town that you can port to and trade freely. In this game you have to actually travel to another players base to do any trades. There Is one player created town called the Sevellian Market or something like that but if your base isn't close to it then it's meaningless for you. Also this game has no NPC's that buy things like cotton cloth. It's more of a barter system where you trade a cow for a pig, or a high quality axe for a something else. (You have to have something someone wants to do any trades)
I agree with you, that a centralized NPC controlled town where players can freely trade, and meet new friends is a better way to go . There are some things I think Salem does better, and there are some things that H&H does better. However I think both games are sparsely populated. In Salem I have never seen anyone near my base either and so picture Salem without going to providence to buy items at the stalls or NPC's to sell your cloth to and it's really not much different in the way of loneliness.
Both Salem & H&H require a unique type of PC gamer and there are few of us out there.
If you continue to play H&H you will notice there is more to do and more to customize. There are over a dozen types of ore/rock that you can mine. (not just iron & rubble like in Salem) , you will find animals that you can tame and then breed, and you can customize the colors of buildings and objects by using certain materials giving your base a unique look.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to PM me, having the common background of Salem should help in explaining things to you.
