I've done some more wandering about and i have no reason anymore to believe i'm near any western edge, but my QG's are still wanting to pop up in the same general direction.

Today I used Commune with nature to get a new quest near my nice village.
But the thing is, I visited a Vortex some hours before that (damn U hemp and flax). And the quest I received now is so far away from me, that the arrow doesn`t even bother to move when I go to quest giver.

So I wonder, what should I do, to receive a quest nearby?

Probably you have done too many of them....they are not a spammable thing, they serve to introduce a bit the game. Stop doing those things and instead play the game.
Make friends with the other crabs or try to escape the bucket.

I'm inclined to agree with this. If you're out foraging and just exploring, they're good to do as points long your route. If you're just trying for quest rewards, the easy ones aren't worth a lot, and the harder ones with a bit more are rarer to get.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Yeah it's working weird. I've been questing for a while in a place I spawned, then I moved like 15 minutes away with my hearthfire, abandoned all quests but didn't get a new one.

I should really learn to read, I just tried to interact with it.
What if I need to interact with it? Criminal actions that leave a scent? Do I need a special skill?

There is special Hearth Magic for this, called Commune with Nature. M -> C.
