We have stacks of fish but I have a way to prove that fish nodes matter I guess. Also for bait we mainly use leeches as they are easy to get and carry. We have 3 lakes approx around where we are. Each lake has different catch rates. One lake catches almost instantly every time and that is our preferred fishing spot. However, go one lake over and you cannot catch anything but maybe like 5 fish an hour which is incredibly slow. I think fishing now has some sort of 'Hardness' to them like mining a cave wall. If you are continuously failing, try changing your fishing spot and take notes where you catch fish faster.

it does appear some areas have fish jumping out of the water at absurd rates and others never have fish at any point. if that's relevant, it certainly seems fish quantities are on a node system also

Well, if there are no fish jumping, there are no fish there. That's what jorb stated previously if I recall correctly. Not really thought about rate. Might be overlapping nodes?
