Orrrrrrrrrrr, you are doing it wrong, I did it 6-7times and works all the time =). All you need is space to the animal to flee. He will only re-aggro if he don`t have enough space.

To answer that last question: pony power lasts based on speed. The faster you go, the faster it drains, the less ground you cover with the horse. I usually stay on speed two and it seems to last long enough. Speed 1 really isn't fast enough to bother with the horse, speed 3 drains too fast unless you're running away.

If you can't stand in a fair combat with a wild animal and tame it, you're probably doing it wrong. It takes 5-7 moves tops from the two people I've heard from that do it successfully every time. It may take getting out and cheesing some other animals so you can get the proper moves from discoveries, though.

Indeed, actually the tutorial that ozzy did works very well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrSpF_aAq2g

I was able to tame horse with 48MC and 40 Agi (+ bronze sword + armors) without cheese, yet you take some small hits (1 HHP at a time)

This kind of layout (closed while taming, obviously) didn`t helped a lot.

It was explained to me in another post (I had a similar question because everything I tried to tame I killed) that there are two factors now that effect your chances of success.

First is the number of times you hit it. I was using punch because in w9 I was told thats the best way to avoid killing it and it always worked for me in w9.
That is no longer the case. You want to do more damage now. If you do less damage per hit and hit more times it increases the Animals chance of dying.

Second is the animal has to have room to flee. If it is totally blocked it will never go into peace mode.

Hope this helps.

Actually, one large hit was the best way, then, too, but just punch, punch, punch was something even a newbtoon could do. As always, you have to be careful not to kill the animal.

Shooting them with an arrow (or sling) is a viable option. Sounds screwy, but I understand it works.

I haven't actually tried it, but in theory boat taming should work. You'd need your hitching posts relatively close to water, but getting animals to flee without taking much damage should be trivial even at low stats.

But if you don't have enough badass moves, don't even try.
I had 26 ua, around 20-25 in stats and a set of attacks close to basic.
