How do you tell what colours things are? Is that the apple green triangle in the corner of some of the icons?

Aren't all defense cards lavender and all attack cards red?

Yeah, it's the triangle in corner. There's green in top left, yellow in top right, red in bottom left and blue in bottom right. The background color tells you what type of attack it is, so a red card with a green corner will hit green opening on your target and a lavender card with green corner will reduce green opening on you. Animals you'll be fighting at this stage use mostly green and blue attacks.

For players newer to the combat system, the boat is your best friend and strongest defense, because you can retreat at anytime to the deep water where the animals cannot follow you, and take some time to get familiar and experiment with the combat UI. You can also back off and clear your openings.

For those of you familiar with some moba terms, what you want to do essentially is kite the animal (attack, move away, repeat). Because your agility early-on is probably lower than the animal you are fighting, they will attack faster than you. So to reduce the damage you take, you can hit them once, and then back away until your cooldowns are off and you are ready to attack again. In this manner, you can trade hits 1 to 1 with whatever you're fighting, and escape at anytime if things go south. I recommend starting with foxes because of their low hp (125), or boars, because boars are incredibly slow.

What agility do various animals have? Is there a wiki entry where I can look it up?

I want to learn how to do combat, so I am not interested in the results so much as the how to.

zebratul gave a chart in his combat guide telling you what your skills should be at with each type of critter.

That chart is... a bit conservative. They're good values to start at if you aren't familiar with the combat system.

Thanks for the follow up slurmp. I had forgotten it was out there.

One note: do not try the boat exploit on stuff that can swim or fly (bats, swan, beaver, walrus) or has ranged attacks (mammoth, troll) and move away as soon as you hear a quick tree chopping sound (or your boat turns red, as they're trying to sink you then).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8grP40pmEkM was really helpful for me in trying to figure out what the heck about fighting. i've now killed a bat and a slime and a boar and a swan with my unarmed little sprucie. I mostly just spam things but I have more of an understanding which is helpful.

What does "cheesing" mean? Having eaten cheese to boost stats for the combat?

L m a o

Cheesing is a term used in games to describe 'breaking' or 'cheating' a mechanic or element in the game.

For example: trapping an enemy behind a rock and attacking from a distance. Even finding a money duplication bug in order to get rich.

Fable 1 has a bug where you can sell apples for more than you buy them, which allows you to become a millionaire selling and buying apples
