If you're not wearing any armor you get KOd by the first cleave, right?

Not really. I'd say cleaving for a pre-mitigated 500 is really easy. Most people have 1500+ health. If you're not wearing armour on purpose and they see that, you could get triple cleaved. You'd probably only take like 20% of your HHP for the first 2 cleaves, then the last one can be the full 60% really easily because no armour. Plus you get something like 10% HHP leeway from concussion damage.
