Is it even doable for a single hermit to kill a troll? Or, should I leave this as a honorable death myself before the end of W10 ?

As a hermit I can confirm yes it is possible for hermits to kill trolls the conventional way solo. Level 1-2 not a problem from ~200 ua+mc with decent gear, for level 3 you probably want around 500 attributes depending on what gear you can get and as much agility as you can get. Level 4-5 trolls are significantly harder than mammoths and if you let them get openings they hit very hard and do a lot of HHP damage, personally I kill the L4s and leave the L5 because it only takes a momentary disconnect and you are going to be unconcious/dead. Unless your stats are way higher than the troll flex on its own won't be enough to keep the openings down (although its always tempting to have it in the setup for the damage it adds to your cleave/sting) so would probably want to use combination of yield ground and side step to keep the red and blue openings down and personally quick barrage and cleave (don't try on players because of amount of times you trigger their manouvre) although if you only have ua then you would have to attack a little differently. For mammoths I defend with artful evasion and occasionally use zig-zig ruse to prevent red opening getting too high, but just basically try to kill it quickly.
Once you are fighting the troll be careful of running away from it (unless there is a minehole to go up/down) because it will drop rocks on your head. If you stay in close combat with it then it won't, also be careful of going near the troll with an animal because it could agro the animal instead of you and then if it makes the animal flee it will again cause a cavein.
