And i am definitely not going to approach a random player to ask where I am out of the fear of getting killed, I have been attacked a couple of times by people on this game when i played in the past, one guy destroyed my boat while i was in it and made me drowned, so i am alittle weary of other players

First, be aware of this from Loftar:

loftar wrote:As a general statement on using custom clients, please note that none of the clients on the forum are endorsed, validated or otherwise checked by Seatribe for defects or malicious code. While we hope that noone would be so dastardly as to post a malicious client here, and while we would, of course, delete the thread on a client found to be malicious, we don't know that in advance.

Be aware, therefore, that a custom client is like any other program you download in that it can steal your passwords, format your hard drive or anything else should its author so wish, and that you should download and run no client that you don't feel that you have strong reason to trust.

It should also be noted that resource files may also contain code that the client will execute, so you should exercise the same caution with third-party resource files as with third-party clients.

Then probably Romov's client as linked below but browse The Wizards Tower,

http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=40400

Can be issues setting up first time so have a good read through the topics in Wizards Tower if you decide to go that way.

Otherwise just using the map, it helps to search around your area until you find the nearest mountain, there aren't many of those in this world (8 I think) so it doesn't take much to identify the one you are on from zooming in to the map.

It is good to be cautious but would be a shame if you make no contact with other players in the game.. Perhaps try setting up an alt you don't care about for searching the immediate area, not everyone is a homicidal maniac (ok quite a few are...) but you might well find people willing to help/cooperate with you which could enhance your enjoyment of the game. Set up a wilderness beacon to allow an alt to spawn at your home.
