expect the worst and hope for the best. death or glory is an interesting combat stance (especially for pve) that i don't see talked about much but usually a blend of ua and mc is best as ua has many strong defensive maneuvers (oak stance is best for defense) and good openings while mc has the high damage stuff

It's as if you're putting effort into being wrong.
Cleave is basically the only damage move except knock his teeth out that is used to deal damage in PvP (if we ignore ravensbite which is not in the group combat meta atm but could be situationally used in 1v1s)
I don't think anyone uses cleave in PvE tbh except very low stat players that can't get the animal to die before it runs without using cleave.
