That sounds about right from my experience and I've planted quite a lot of trees. I'm pretty intolerant of unnatural looking terrain so terraforming's a big thing to me. From my experience on average a tree will transform about 2 to 3 tiles into the terrain type it is planted in, except grass which it transforms into wald (ugh). They usually, if not always transform the tile they are planted in, plus a couple more. I don't recall ever seeing them go 3 tiles out from the center.

i did batches of 16 and had a 4x4 square and would harvest/cut it all at once (the stunted ones would go too). i would keep from using the larger trees that took over a tile and used amber's middle tile thing (ctrl-x). worked for apples, mulberrys and.. i think spruce but spruce was prone to being over a tile

i got into doing things in batches and planning a week out as a hermit. although i quit a few months ago as it became a job for me
