Not knowing how any of these mechanics work and not wanting to lose a week of progress again, I obliged and transfered ownership of the hat to the dude - which is all fine, I don't care much about it, however I was under the assumption that in the next World (whenever that happens) id be able to get it again and use it?

My question is basically - is the hat now forever lost from my account without a way of getting it back, or is it still tied to my account?

Just say no.

When asked; "Hat or Die" always choose die. While thee chance of death is there, if you have enough stats it usually it's just a ko, you might get lucky and send an alt to that spot and they might have leftmost of your shit on the ground

I see, thing is though I'm just playing casually - exploring and taking things at my own pace, so I'm way behind the curve already. And more importantly - I got murdered a week ago at which point I was considering if it was worth starting over again and I decided I'll try, so I really wasn't willing to die yet again so early. From what I can tell, I can repurchase the hat for 15$ at most, and can get other hats from subscribing anyway, so I'm fine with it. Only thing bothering me is the fact that this is bound to happen again, and I'm out of ways to survive the next encounter :(. It's also pretty hard to move since I spent 2 weeks building my base and have just started to reap the benefits off of it, and moving now and rebuilding would be another week of work at least, with no guarantee that I'm in a safer environment.

It's my first time playing from the beginning of the world and it's much more dangerous, which is both fun and kind of a deterent, but hey, it's all an experience and an adventure, I'm learning a lot about the dangers of the world and potential ways to avoid them. And if I get murdered again, I can always just wait 3months until the hardcore people stop playing and hop on to get my farming going :D

But I am curios about the "chance to die" thing you mentioned - is it not always a guarantee that I will die? How exactly does it work, you said stats affect it, but could you share some numbers here? I'm only at 30s as far as attributes go, so I'm curious if I should maybe be focusing more on that aspect so that I can survive future encounters :D

That's quite simple - closer you are to your max hp (less wounds) lesser the chance to be dead after ko. You are dying when sum of your wounds is the same or bigger than your max hp. It's everything that you need to know.

Ah, I see. I did get murdered before with 100% hp - I'm guessing the dude purposefully injured me and didn't go for high damage hits so that he could guarantee my death? If that's the case, I guess I'm going to have to learn how to PvP to defend myself, was bound to happen at some point. I'll make extra visitor gates and keep them open in my base too so that I can run away and disengage if I'm understanding that mechanic correctly, might be my only hope at this point :D

Thanks for the clarification

There are few people who have knowledge how to do this. And it only works if you are not trying to defend yourself. If you run and press defences it is almost impossible to die with full hp.

Weapons have grievous damage, murder skill when actually active gives you a higher chance to murder someone in the last hit before KO but you risk your own death using. But most of it is as Halbertz says, keep your wounds low and SHP/HHP up. Concussion do a ton of damage,.

And if you gave the guy a hat you made yourself a bigger target, he knows he can now extort you for hats and will keep coming back and trying to find you. Some people play Hat or Die and no matter which option you choose it'll be death. Not everyone is a sparing as this guy. Hats and tokens are basically the only real trophies in the game so they tend to be more sought after, everything else can just be remade.

More specifically a Concussion will, randomly, be between 5% and 20% of your maximum HP, IE a 100 HP character will take between 5 and 20 damage, and a 250 HP character will take between 12 and 50 damage.
Total misplay.

I think possibly you are underestimating the HP of the average sprucecap. I am also fairly confident that you are underestimating their ability to get red defences.

Source: died last world because I didn't have any red defences. Also (separately) died last world world while moderately successfully running and pressing defences ... until I ran into some wolves :(
