In an IRL scuffle to the death, which is becoming increasingly rare, people would use every means at their disposal. A thousand years ago combat was super brutal, it wasn't like this choreographed lightsaber duel you see in movies now. you couldn't always swing your sword and land a hit because they expected it and knew how to guard it, so there was some wrestling, mostly punching a face when openings were available or kicking to break the other fighter's balance, even most knights carried a knife for sticking into eye slits after grappling them to the ground, or to stab joints in armor. this is also how people fought in the trenches during WW1. I think it's pretty realistic,
