Can confirm. When you hack it down just few normal boulders appear.

They generate liftable boulders.

Destroyed several they all just explode into regular boulders.

it looks like cavedust can drop more than .01kg at a time, and there also appears to be random variation in the quality of ore mined from the same tile with the same tool and skills

I was very disappointed by these, I expected something much cooler out of them but they just burst in to pile of boulders. I suspect maybe some of them could offer ore/coal but not that I've seen yet.

When I hear that the explode to boulder I assume these are replacement for surface ore boulder but more fair, since you must need metal to break them in first place. So maybe. Otherwise they literally are just big rock.
