Pick / axe substance myth was busted already, and the person that put forth the theory himself ditched it. I think we're now going with the whole square average thinger as the right formula, taking all elements into account. Keep in mind that with this sort of formula as long as the elements sum up to the same number, a highly uneven distribution will be higher than an even one. So 100/10/10 is better than 40/40/40. A pick will also contribute double its qualities to the mining power formula, while an axe only 1x qualities.

I will admit I did not do extensive testing to prove that substance was what matters, and it did already in my mind raise the question of how substance and vitality mattered,. So yes, the root of the average of squares (or as you call it "the whole square average thinger") is most plausible at this point. And yes, pickaxes continue to be more effective than axes.

no, last I heard statues increase village authority only, banners increase village area.

Thanks. What use is authority since traveling is gone.

Village claim without authority will not enforce permissions and dosn't protect against decay.

So I went on a four hour forage/sight seeing trip north today. I saw a lot of villages large and small that had cattle dead on the ground. Sometimes 10+. Not lined up like it was done on purpose for later. Is there something going on or do dead cattle just persist a long time and these villages are inactive?

Can I move a cart across a river some how? Load it in a boat?

Effectively no, not right now. Moving carts and wagons, as well as any other potential vehicles that can't be lifted or moved through shallow water, requires a raft, which hasn't been implemented yet. (Was a thing in previous worlds.)

Are pregnant cows supposed to take 5ish+ days to give birth?

And to avoid posting twice in a row :

Are calf properties supposed to swing so wildly that they can become 18/6/10 from a 10/10/10 mother and father being fed 40+ to all swill?

It seems so, a bull I killed lasted over two weeks before I butchered it, and a sheep lies since last monday and still doesn't smell. Wild animals usually decay in 3-4 days. I guess it's because wild animals kill off each other, and there would be corpses everywhere if it wasn't like that.

Yeah, they do that. For both questions.
I noticed that sheep have much more twins than cattle. Got twins twice in a row, and once earlier. Anyone else getting this?

For silk making atleast.
Absolutely.
It will pretty much guarantee 2x more silk filaments from each cocoon. Which means 2x more production.
Also it is very handy for trees as you will get less ones that stop growing.
For farming that 1 extra seed isnt that critical, but if you do silk or/and plant trees lot I suggest to get it.
Also you can make great helmet.
