You need to have discovered a bar of any of the hard metals.

Other than prospecting, there's no way to tell what's behind a cave wall without mining it. Once you've dug out the wall you can see what's behind it. If you just dig around in caves you'll eventually find ore, though it can take a while if you're unlucky.

do claims decay after someone is inactive after a certain period?

I find a lot of decaying places, and itd be nice to be able to fix them up but they tend to have claims even though they are evidently vacant places.

Yes but it takes a long time, likely months or years.

@ Em, .... once they have been inactive for a certain amount of time, I think it's 2 months now, you can walk on the claim and interact with anything on it without criminal acts. And, yes, it does then start to decay.

Remember our first base, with your Italian friend? Well, I had a char there that I'd forgotten about, I logged onto her two days ago and I can now walk on his claim, enter the house, interact with everything on it, which I couldn't previously. Everything on that claim is now starting to decay. I still am trapped there though, lol, as pali though decaying is still intact. :(

lol. I thin he dropped his claim when he left, but seems it's taken time to disappear. very odd.

I'm sure troll can come and save you, his group wasn't far off there, or vig if he's still around. Was a very populated area...

^^ I don't think they actually disappear, though I may be wrong, there is one near my hermit base that is the same, the claim still shows up but I can interact with everything on it. I was under the impression that to make the claim disappear entirely you still have to bash the claim stick ... but tbh I'm not sure.

And, lol, yeah, I'm not that bothered about her, she has like 10 in everything and I don't want to raise a 3rd char, neither do I want Arvin coming along and killing her ... ... I was thinking of using her as an alt to store things on is all. :)
