I took a stick and (i think it was) shift+clicked it on my fire and it caught fire (turning in to firebrand), I then put that in inv as usual and got ash. Don't know if that's an acceptable way to do it for you, but took less time then actually making the firebrands for all i could tell.

Any tips on how to catch rabbits easily?

They are really fast now even if you sprint after them.

The only luck I've had is to try and get as close to one as possible on an area where sprinting is possible, and then just run them down

Another thing is I think foxes can kill small animals now, so you might be able to discover dead rabbits that way
