Find a nice long bit of shallow water and lure an animal to one end of it, preferable the end that makes it you have the maximum space possible between your end, and the other. Get all defenses up and attack until it has no defenses up. Attack until it flees. Since it's in shallow water, you can boat up to it and continually attack it until it dies. I killed my first badger this way.

You can also use this technique to easily earn CDs. I got artful evasion and steal thunder along with some moves i already had just from trying to kill the animal.

if you have aggroed an animal and you want to shoot it, just right click the animals icon in the top right of the screen. you will shoot right at it instead of having to finick around its feet.

For you scrubs out there, I'm sure you know you can feed animals using seeds.
Now, what's good for seeds? Carrots!
You harvest carrots during the seeding stage, put 1000 seeds in a bucket and empty the bucket into whatever the heck Coops or Troughs for 200 units of fodder.

If you find a shore like this with an escape route for the animal, just row up to the spot when the animal tries to flee

Ash is a "liquid" object like flour and seeds. Yes, you can stack it up to a certain size and split it. The quality averages out over the stack. I'm not sure if ash can be stored in barrels or buckets, though. I haven't tried.
