This is my list of known skills, what am I missing to be able to build a palisade? All I can make are little wooden fences.

Block of Wood, Leather, Bone Glue, Rope discovered.

I'm having the same problem right now. How is the map going to help, will it show where you are?

You will need to party a friend that is at the location you want to get at. You then follow the party arrows towards said friend, possibly having to drop party and reinvite 20 odd times whenever the indicator gets stuck.

This pretty much.
Or then your friend can make character stone and you can travel to it from another character stone or spawn at it.
