How efficient is a pickaxe for mining compared to a stone axe? What quality does a pickaxe need to be to surpass my q68/83/71 stone axe?

average quality determines what hardness you can mine, this is the same for pickaxe and stone axe. pickaxe doubles the mining speed i believe, regardless of quality.

But doesn't quality also affect the speed of mining? Or was that changed in Hafen?

it's not double speed sorry (think this was changed in a patch), the mining formula doubles the quality of a pickaxe. your mining ability is based on sqrt(STR*avgToolQ). so for pickaxe this would be something like sqrt(STR*avgPickaxeQ*2).

mining speed also depends on mining ability yes. most of the time you're gonna be better off with a pickaxe.

In other words, with a q70 stone axe, a pickaxe will be useless unless it's q35+?

Efficiency wise yes, speed wise no. A pickaxe is , i think, always the same speed (i haven't tested this theory that mining ability affects mining speed, but it seems wrong off the top of my head). And a q10 pickaxe will always be faster than even a q80 axe. If you can afk mine a lot, a higher quality axe is good (as well as for high hardness nodes), otherwise a pickaxe will get you through stuff faster, if for more food cost.

i checked ingame: speed per hit is always the same regardless of tool quality, which is still at least twice as fast for pickaxes compared to stone axes.

mining ability is checked against stone hardness, so a better tool will mine in bigger portions and less hits (ie 90% per hit needs 2 hits while 40% per hit needs 3). so if the axe quality is a lot higher it will mine faster. as lachlaan says a pickaxe is still faster in most cases (the stone axe would be faster if it takes 1 hit where the pickaxe would need 4 hits).

How difficult is it to destroy village banners as an intruder? Is covering my otherwise unprotected mine in banners a waste of time?

i don't think they can be destroyed unless you have no auth. you can walk through them though so hopefully you were not planning on a banner barrier, but just the village claim coverage

first question - is possible to damage brickwall with cave ins? I mean if i build pillar next to wall and then destroy it it will make cave in and what about wall? Will be damaged?
Second question - is possible to destroy mine hole? what is minimum strenght to do so. can you destroy it from cave?
