tar kilns quality indeed softcaps. and the wood/planks used are hardcaps.
q20 wood in a q 10 tar kiln makes q 15 coal.
q 20 wood in a q 40 tar kiln makes q 20 coal.

or so my own tests have confirmed.

Nice necro. Helpful post though, would be good in the tips thread.

I have 7 going at once and use w/e logs i can get, no differences noticed between the tar kilns or wood used, all q 10 wild harvest wood of course :D

Just tar output is different atm. And I asked: tar kilns aren't going to influence the Q so don't use good clay on it :)

Didn't it softcap the q of the coal and or tar? I thought so :|

Edit: Fuck got confused by the necro, I had read the first page only sorry. Update OP

Why? It's on the wiki.

It's a necro'd thread. We had bad information when that was posted, and this thread is what clarified it.

Ukhata wrote:the wood/planks used are hardcaps

The wood is an input material. When processing, one of four things can happen to the output material: nothing (output = input), softcapped (output diminished if station is lower than input materials, and is usually the average of two values), hardcapped (lowered to the station/skill value instead of averaged), or calculated together with all other variables (think of baking a blueberry pie).

Please don't necro help topics for what should go in the C&I forum.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
