To directly answer your question, pick up the branch so it is on the cursor and right click the fireplace. This is how you fuel all objects, be it setting up for a fire or pouring water into another container.

Otherwise, the forums are not the best place for fast answers. Check the wiki, check the new player guide, log into the Haven IRC channel--Server: synirc.net, #haven. Mibbit is a good web-based IRC client: http://www.mibbit.com (Note that the IRC hasn't been very populated recently, so you might not have much luck getting answers there in a timely manner.)
