Was more a limitation of the engine, not of the style. Have to remember this was before 3d accelerators and clock speeds were 100x slower than today's computers. The technique actually persisted up until Unreal, Quake 3, something around there, and was still heavily used for several years for a lot of different situations after GPUs became common.

Quake was the first full 3d (both map and monsters) ego shooter game. Descent had beaten it to being the first full 3d game.

If you want a cool current game that blends sprites with 3d effects then take a look at Factorio.

Well, if you want the first 3d game, you have to go way back to 1982 or so (or something like that) and there were more than a few using vector graphics. ;)
