Unarmed or Melee? (and other combat questions)

I'm pretty sure on "Unless otherwise specified ... melee combat matters" means melee combat matters on pretty much every melee skill.
Also, I've been leveling melee and it sure does affect your attack weight.
At least with sideswipe, chop, sting, raven's bite, quick barrage.
Didn't use any AoE attacks skills though.

Yes, melee combat stat is affecting attack weight for make opening. But it is not affecting damage. People are suggesting here that it is common to only raise UA and use UA attack to make opening, then go in for damage with melee weapon for big hits.

The problem with going pure mc is that weapon moves are broken for the moment.

To clarify this, moves that are descripted with "according to weapon" only use your mc weight and cannot be buffed by additonal points in the move since loftor removed the weight from weapons a few patches ago.
So the calcuations look like this for weapon moves.
Your melee combat + (weapon weight, which is 0 * U), say we have 100 mc and a sword and im gonna use Sting with 5 pts once and once with 1 pts it would look like this:

100+(0*1.5) = 100 weight
and with 1 pts
100+(0*1) = 100 weight

you would think a weapon would always do more damage then unarmed.. Never bring a fist to a sword fight..

Tried using 1 and 2 combat cards for Side Sweep, didn't see any difference in openings created or damage. Kinda sad.

Also is there actually any effect of UA for Opportunity Knock?

i only added a little amount of points for shield up during very very early game that has already passed, like 30 mc or even less is enough so you can kill bears and mooses (a bit time consuming) and smaller animals (a lot faster)
