Have it as like a "proving" area before the wizard area where you fight an AI hearthling, only the fight is super slow, impossible to lose and basically teaches the new player the basics of the combat system. Just teaching them about openings and how to use them.

Edit: Also it might be an idea to give them some extra moves for the fight to teach them about initiative points.

agreed, tutorial could use some work. But I feel like this game has a learning curve similar (but nowhere near) EVE's learning curve.

Okay I'm confused about this:

So punch uses unarmed, duh, and chop or something uses melee, but do you just not draw a weapon or something? Obviously I can't punch with an axe, but does having an axe make me better at punching? do I draw the weapons somehow to increase my fucking things up factor or do I have to murder more foxes than there are in the world to learn real combat abilities first?

You don't automatically equip weapons. You need to manually do so.

Weapon damage is only figured into attacks that actually say they use weapon damage on the card, typically Melee Combat cards: Chop, Cleave, etc. To get these, you can get some from ants to start, bats next, and then foxes and badgers. It's somewhat random, and each animal only has so many different cards you can collect from it.

I heard you have to have an initiative builder first before ants will give chop...

No, you don't. My experience is you get chop or another IP user before you get something that will give IP.

But how do I use it without IP builders?

You won't be able to until you do get something that can generate IP. Just keep searching for new combat actions.

ants are really painful, they hit through armor, so they can cause quite a bit of damage. Moreso if you only have 100hp. I started with foxes when i began playing, then did badgers.
