Occasionally you'll hit a 'wall' of tiles you can't confirm to be safe, which requires a support (unless you want to dig all the way around it). There's also no safe way to dig out cave walls (and if it has dust your next tile is simply a random guess).

Once you have your first metal, it's always more efficient and more convenient to just build mine supports for ore mining. Even just the additional yield from unsafe tiles more than makes up for the cost of the support.

Rustroot Is by far the easiest way to find ore ... And the clever One.

You Just Need to figure out the trick with the ingame map to precisely locate the position underground.

Tar kilns impossibly important, if you ever plan on running regular smelters, much less steel... you will need it en masse. My steel factory last world (for 1 person without alts/bots) was sucking in around 3k coal per 60 hours.

You ... do know that steel crucibles can be fed with wood blocks, right?

Yes but I can't mine as high of quality wood blocks as I can black coal
