Do animals die randomly? I've found two foxes (separate occasions) and just now found a horse lying dead with no other person around to have killed it..

Animals now naturally fight each other in the wild. Especially badgers and foxes.

If you've found a wildhorse lying around - someone killed it but didn't want the corpse. If the horse was domesticated - probably got lost and died of starvation. In any way, a dead horse = there were another player around recently.

Yea I knew about the foxes killing chickens rabbits and squirrels. I didn't know badgers attacked foxes.
It wasn't domesticated, it was a wild-horse. I don't see why someone would leave a wild-horse dead without skin-ing or butchering it for anything..

Quality matters. Inventory space matters. A lot of variables. I personally leave ~30% of animals I kill just lying on the ground. The percentage would be a lot higher if I didn't inspect most of animals I see before aggroing.

You inspect it. Yes, you have to get close to it. Yes, it sometimes aggroes at you if you're inspecting a bear/boar/badger.
