This feature was intentionally removed by the devs. Overall, it's minimal, and it stops players from making multi-million point banks for when they die.

Use Pine blocks. They have a x5 Tar yield. I've exchanged some quality stuff for slave labor a few months back, the guy fired my 3 kilns with Pine for 3 days through. I still haven't used half of resulting 6+ barrels of tar.

Also; what's with the random timing of how long it stays lit?

It's supposed that you get yourself a torch, like, at day 2 of playing, so you'll just be using "Light a firebrand" option once a day. Although it is unreasonably taxing compared with other similar activities, like grinding stuff or digging.
As for random timing - there's an Experience event to achieve there, if your firebrand stays lit for ~30 seconds or so, you'll get "Carrying Light" lore. I guess that's the sole purpose of that randomness.

Yea I already have a torch, I'm just questioning because it took me like, 3-4 tries just to light the damn thing this time and I was just curious.
I know of the experience too..every-time I light one I try to see how long it lasts..
