Higher q clothes have more gilding slots? A pair of q 20 fur boots would have more gilding slots than a q4 pair?

No, it does not work this way. Every item has one "slot". When you gild it you have a chance for that slot to remain open. That chance depends on item affinity and gild affinity, those affinities have percentages. If they match, you get a percentage depending on your corresponding skill. If they don't match, you get lowest percentage chance.

But the clothing quality caps the stat bonus from the gilding i think. For example if you have a q10 nettle shirt and try to gild it with a q30 leather patch (explo and survival + 6 or so) the effective bonus on your gilded shirt will only be +4 (or so). Could be totally wrong, though...

Yes, slipped my mind to mention it.

Quality of item softcaps quality of gild. And, if you recycle a q10 item gilded with q30 gild, if you manage to extract the gild it'll be q20.

The fuel bug where you would put in only one coal or branch and wait a bit before lighting no longer works that is true, however you can still put in 11 low q coal in to a smelter or 3 branches instead of 4 in an oven, then you relight after it goes out using 1 good q fuel

If you recycle item you have chance to get gild back, but this is not reliable.
