How do I equip a stone axe? I tried putting it in the equipment screen but it's not working.

Maybe you are trying to equip it in the wrong slot ... it's the 4th one down, alternatively you can use shift and left click the tool from your inventory.

Some objects are not liftable, what are you trying to lift?

Also did you equip the axe?
