What is leaving this weird trail of stomped earth?

Don't think so. It looks artificial in any way. Straight lines through forests (where you'd bumb against stones and trees with a char), weird loops at cliffs (but not avoiding them either), spots are at least the seize of 2x2,...

It reminds me of a trail not that far away. connecting a nearly empty cave and ending somewhere in the woods (without any clear destination. it just ends).
It even seems to have altered the water height from deep to shallow:

That, my fellow hearthling, is an "old riverbed". They are made when a worldmap is generated for no apparent reason at all.

Easiest and mybe most dangerous way: Ask other locals.

If that deosn't work for you explore your area and try to find biomes that are rather rare. Like Mountains and swamps. Remember their shape and try to find them on the map.
