Using LP to buy skills and discovering items. I've found that about the easiest way to learn new things is to move into a friendly village. Most villages will give you higher level gear and teach you how to play and in return you help the village grow. It's much easier to play as a group than solo in this game.

I've been trying to find a village, but the world map is very vague so I can't locate my position and whenever I do find a fort, nobody in it is online.

The odds of finding a friendly village by wandering around in game are pretty small, and if you do find one they'll probably just think that you're a raider. Instead go into the "Dwarves and Thieves" section of the forum and either find a post offering places in a village, or put up a post of your own asking if any one will have you. Only thing to remember is that the village will probably be pretty far away, so you can either travel there or start a new character at a wilderness beacon that they set up.
