Horse questions in W10

Sometimes when I defeat them in combat, have peace mod on and see the tame number appear but they still die? Anyone else have this issue? Is that considered a failed tame attempt? Am I doing to much dmg?

have the same problem with sheep, i started using punch instead of sideswipe when they are between 80 - 100 health, seems to work alright i guess but im pretty paranoid about it.

Lost 4 horses that died and showed 100% tamed. Doing 2 dmg on last punches. I've been only able to tame one sheep out of the last ten and lost every horse, cow and pig since. About to call this glitchy "taming" system quits.
