place a stockpile of blocks into a tar kiln then light it, 16hours or so after it shall finish and you can collect coal.

So i'm up to the "Visit Radla" quest. it gives me a tree looking pointer, and it points me to this rock. but it's in the middle of a town, so i can't interact with it.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this something that needs to be fixed in the future?

You're not doing anything wrong. It's a random quest generator. Sometimes you get targets that are on claims. I'm not going to say it's intended as in "yeah, we planned it this way just to screw with our players," but it was known to be a possibility and is functioning as planned. I'm going to say that the solution for this is much like the "claim" solution for everything else in that it requires more resources on the server than the devs want to allocate to it. (This isn't the only mechanic where claims and such have been an issue.)

You should be able to abandon the quest and start a new one at any time. You could find out when your neighbors are on and see if you can get permission to perform your quest duties.

What is the go-to custom client of this era? In the past I have used Ender's client, one that has been very reliable through worlds.
