if i remember correctly.
it will "starve" if you milk the cow too often too much.
if you milk it completely and then ignore it for at least it day, the calf will just drink whatever is in the cow at refill, and satiate its needs.

He was explicitly asking about coal, not the overall quality formula. Overall, I believe the crucible quality still matters. I'd have to double check the wiki or search the forums.
