if i remember correctly.
it will "starve" if you milk the cow too often too much.
if you milk it completely and then ignore it for at least it day, the calf will just drink whatever is in the cow at refill, and satiate its needs.
Cows replenish milk on a regular basis. It is possible to milk all animals dry and for the calf to take a hunger hit. The lower the quantity of milk the cows produce makes this more likely. You can leave a barrel of milk just like a food trough for calves to feed on. (I understand this still works... kick me if I'm wrong.) Used to be all babies would feed off whatever mother was nearby, too, be it pigs, sheep, or cows. No idea if this is still the case.
