Ok, maybe you can, and I'm just miss-remembering from last world or two. Seem to recall you couldn't at least world 8. (Of course, why would you want to since no hunger and no energy filled from them?)

Just for the clarity, the first quest you start searches for a questgiver in a set radius around you, but when another npc gives you a quest, he searches for another npc in a radius around him, so it can get relatively farther and farther away from your base. The distance between questgivers doesn't change, it's just that questgivers make a "chain" that goes further and further as you complete quests.
