Why is leather required to build a wheelbarrow? As far as I can tell, the wheelbarrows in-game look like it's all wood construction.

Two as far as I'm aware. I've not seen any on one.

For the wheel I would guess. Having a purely wooden wheel would be harder to move on hard to grip terrain than having one with leather on it for better traction.

Hm. Good thought. But, eight pieces? I could see maybe half of that.

I would suggest visiting any museum that features tools, vehicles, and gear from the period. Leather is used for a lot of things--grips, bearings, cushions, binding. Often times corners would be nailed together, but with a leather strap around it similar to the way we put a metal brace to reinforce. The wheel axles would use oiled leather as a padding and bearing to make the vehicle easier to move. Wheels often were bound with something to hold it together. Solid wood wheels split relatively quickly and a leather binding would help keep it from completely breaking once it started cracking. (Steel was used later or in heavy duty applications.)

What happens if I have less XP than required for curios that are already studying?

Current curios will finish if I recall. You can't insert a new curio if you're low XP. This also applies to study desks.

The related attributes and skills in crafting won't raise quality, no. Just be sure that your numbers are enough to not softcap your products.
