Where do you guys put your chicks in the coop so when they mature they have enough space.

Just build a second coop just for chicks, they do not need the hens.

put them in a separate one all at the top, they automatically fill any 2x2 slot.

if you have only a few chicks and have ocd you could space them out with them in the bottom right corner.

OK it doesn't matter. Once a chick matures into an adult the game tries to place the chicken in the largest available space starting in the upper left corner.

A village claim can be extended downwards, a personal one not.

Just means that of I go deeper they'll have to be unclaimed which isn't ideal.

Is it a bit crazy having a village all for one human?
