No, they have a native hardness modified by the hardness field. If the ore has a natural hardness of 15, and the field is, say... 2.0*, you'll need to be able to mine a rock with hardness of 30. To figure out what hardness you can mine, take the square root of the product of your tool (stone axe or pick axe) and strength. (In case you're curious, this is called the geometric mean, and is used a lot in quality calculations in Haven.)

*I'm pulling these numbers out of thin air. I've no idea how the server tracks things internally, but I think it's a decent representation of how things generally work by the way it was described and previous knowledge.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Bloodstone has been ok for me but I only ever found one boulder. I got 7 iron bars from 3 loads, and I found a cassiterite boulder with enough for one load and got 2 tin bars.

My most recent smelting was 1 full load of horn silver that produced 1 silver nugget, 1 full load of heavy earth with 0 bars, and a third with 9 heavy earth and 16 horn silver that produced 1 bar of iron and 2 silver nuggets.

Haven't had any luck mining yet but I finally found rustroot, but can't test prospecting until Tuesday.

Which ore is better - heavy earth or iron ochre?

Do you find these straight on cave walls, or you have to dig/mine yourself deep through a bunch of common type stones?

You can sometimes find ores after mining on the wall once, but it's pretty random. I've got some great luck finding cassiterite in around 4 caves in lots of places, but with iron ochre I only found it once and only after prospecting above the cave to find ores. It was two tiles deep when I actually found the spot in the cave, but I found part of the node on the wall two tiles to the side on a really hard wall.

My suggestion is to keep looking for rustroot until you got a decent amount to prospect all around a cave and find any possible ores around it. Knowing that there is actually something there is a great incentive to keep mining.

Those were all boulders I found on the surface. I've only found heavy earth mining at an old base, but that was found after breaking the outer wall.

Does black ore look noticeably different to coal? I keep getting excited when I see a black wall exposed... and then find out it's only coal.

Which would be fine. I mean, that's a needed resource... but it's not the resource I need right now.

This is how I meant. Mining down the boulder surface to find out what is in the first layer. I would be happy for heavy earth as well. :)
