Further question: Is it just double wide palisade gates that aren't smashable? Seems like a bug.

You should be able to place a wrecking ball inside the open gate so it'll target the gate itself (by not rotating it when dropping it from one of the tiles in the gate onto the other).

My issue is that unset (less than 24 hour old) double wide palisade gates don't seem to even be valid as a hand destruction target. Was wondering if maybe I was missing something. Even if they were set enough after the 16 or so hours, I should be getting the "not strong enough" error rather than being unable to click on them whatsoever. Bug report?

Possibly. Is your character able to destroy the cornerposts that contain the gate (given they were build in the same timeframe), or does it behave identical to trying to destroy the open gate?

At the time I was trying it initially (first post,) the cornerposts were destructible and I destroyed them, yeah. I've tested with a different gate built in the same timeframe, and it's also untargetable. Will post a bug report.

Is there a benefit to sleeping in beds instead of just logging off or are beds purely aesthetic?

If you have travel weariness from teleporting with charter stones, sleeping is one of the only ways to reduce it if you don't have heartwood leaves handy.

So, how am I actually supposed to surround my claim with a palisade? Flattening out the whole area will require digging many thousands of units of dirt. How long does it take? How do you do it without completely destroying your hunger modifier? Also, when I'm flattening ground I find that my client (Amber) crashes every few minutes and the graphics turn into random images.

You can build a palisade in a tile 3 dirt up/down from the current one, making actual slopes, easier than it seems.
