Put a beehive in their vicinity and wait a week for some pods, last I checked.

do they look visually different? or is this a case of just leaving a poppy field to grow for an immense amount of time?

No visual difference. I advise you to just mass plant poppies on one of the abandoned bases in your neighbourhood, and harvest in 10-15 days.

I only know pork steak and tubers

Mammoth meat pies give +2 con. Also Oscypki, Roncal, Stilton, and Gouda.

You might also try apple pies, which are +1 but are pretty good.

fishing line(stinging nettle, hemp, yarn, etc)
hook type(bone, metal, gold)
lure type
bait type
fishing location(river deep/shallow, lake deep/shallow)
time of day(night or day)

all those effect fishing, not to mention your will and survival i do believe play in it as well. Some fish can only be caught with specific parameters.

Metal Hook, Flax Fibres, Tin Fly, Rock Lobster Lure, Earthworm, Entrails, Leech, Woodfish Lake Depths, River Depths

according to the wiki, but id loosely follow it and just recommend trial and error with the lure rod.

IDK, it feels more like it's based on nodes than water type. My 17% eel spot is in a lake, and like fifty tiles away in the same lake I can't catch eel, and both spots are deep water.

This. Fish come on nodes now, so you need the right coordinates, not just the right location type. This is another of those things brought over from Salem development that I'm not in complete agreement with. I liked the old fishing method better. (This one just takes a little more work... is workable, just the exploration needed.)
