Maybe they're bugged like the tanning tubs have been in legacy, resetting to beginning on every map unload?

It seems like this, because 8 days to burn... Or maybe developers specially made this process so long, so players cant go to endgame that fast.

I strongly doubt that they are anything but slow. I'll have a look at it, though.

And just for notice:
If it takes around 7-10 days to burn with full stock (20 or 40?) and will only double coal amount then world will be flooded with tar kilns, because to smelt ore you need 11 coal and one tar kiln gives only 40 or 80. And it only for 3 or 7 times to smelt ore with low chance to get metal... Not quite reasonable to make this process so long.

I did some quick reading on Wikipedia on tar kilns and it seems pine and birch are commonly used wood (birch being of especially good quality) so I may try an experiment with a few blocks and time it. Uness Jorb wants to chime in on if wood type has any affect on time.

i put two blocks into mine, (he blocked more). Dont remember which kind just wantet to test it. he runs now for 3 days and produced over 12 liters of tar.
