love the look of it.
I wonder if tar is dark enough instead of spruce

I did actually want to use tar but at the time I made them I only had one tar kiln which was being used to produce high q coal with boards, so I wasn't getting much tar from them, I'm impatient, so rather than build another kiln and wait 3 days for the tar I just used the boughs to finish them off. But, I think tar sticks would look really good. :)

ApocalypsePlease wrote:It should be noted, very VERY importantly that the mansion wood colour uses the "inner" wood colour (i.e. not the bark, but the board colour). I made a terrible mistake believing it would use the bark texture and ended up with a hideous house, don't fall victim to the same trap

I'm glad I'm not the only one doing mistakes like this
saw a few green wooden houses and thought I can make a nice cherry boat with willow (green) rims. was I wrong.

is there a general understanding of when a log/board uses the inner color, or bark?

e:
second try, both log and board uses the inner colors.

Pretty happy with this, though I should have used bronze for the chain.
Made from cherry, goldenchain, porphyry, basalt and cast iron.

Thought I'd add mine so there's yet more examples in here, since I found this topic so useful when planning!

Windmill: Marble, poplar, leather fabric.
Stonestead: Marble, poplar, straw, copper.

Image

I was originally going to go with linen for the windmill sails so it matched the straw thatching more but when I tested out the leather fabric I fell in love with the colour, so it'll do until I can make some sort of red/brown roof! Red tiles maybe one day..? ;)
