When/how to harvest poppy so one gets the opium pod?

I got some by waiting at least 2 extra days, idk when they start showing up time wise, but as far as I can tell past it being really random, longer you wait more likely you are to get even more.

I can't pin down the "when", but after it's passed the "how" is as simple as harvesting the crop like you would do with any other crop. The only thing that changes between getting a flower output and a pod output is the item that's left on the ground once the action is complete.

As for "when", I've just been leaving my field of poppies for two or three days after they've all matured and I'll almost always end up with 3-6 pods from about 33 plants.

^^ Same, I have a grand total of 12 poppy plants ... I leave them for 2/3 days after they are ready for harvesting and so far have always harvested 2 (and once 3 ) pods from them.

It's hard to pin-point as I don't always play every day anymore, maybe the time I got 3 it had been longer.

Is there a way to rotate a house when placing it so as to have the door facing the side I prefer?
