Spawning Area

Is there area where everyone spawn "near" (i mean here not right next to but close eneough to get there in half-1hour) eachother or is it totally random, so you and your friend can spawn on opposite sites of the map?

from my personal experience it seems the spawns are clustered in the center, as picking a direction and running in it forever leads you to ever less touched areas.
