How do I make things from signs?

Dragging items and dropping them onto the open window, etc. making a pole and putting in a stick for it, doesn't work. Also, I have carpentry and can't make a fishing pole after getting fishing?
Would be nice if someone accepted an idiot like me into the game so I could become more proficient with it... seems to not be happening at the moment.

This took me a few moments, but apparently you no longer need to place items into a signpost to start construction, simply have the neccessary materials on your person and start construction.

One of the videos shows something about using the stockpiles near a build site, but I can't get that to work yet. I'll have to check it again.

Either have the objects in your inventory or in a really nearby stockpile and then press build. There's no need to drag materials into the signs.
