Start near a friend?

How to start to play near a friend? If you double click on the heart fire at character creation it seems to play you randomly. Is this the only way? Any easy way to meet in the game? BTW I know how to add kin, would that help?

All spawns are random right now. you can still use a hearth secret to kin someone, but it's more or less random wandering until you get close enough for a party arrow to show up.
