When big game (Deer/Bear/Boar) are killed on water

Do their bodies disappear? I was chasing a boar for a good 40 minutes after dealing about 484 damage (Seems they have 500 health) and it kept running on water and staying there for ages, which made me not want to kill it due to the possibility of losing loot.
