Just a question, is it right to assume every map in a cave corresponds to a surface map? so for example if you wanted to dig into someones cave who was 5 maps this way or that way, you would mine 5 maps this way or that way respectively?

This is how it worked previously. I haven't seen that it differs any so far.

I have seen 2 caves a screen within each other. Underground both showed up so yes on the minimap, you can dig over 5 screens to someone elses hole in the ground and come up.
