How to fuel Ore Smelters/Oven/Crucibles?

Is there a new coal ore I do not know about, these things wont take wood or branches? Anyone help out please?

I believe you either need to find coal from mining, or make a tar kiln and let it burn out (takes 2 days or so) to get charcoal.
